Join the Summer Travel Surge – where do you want to go?

Travelers are hitting the road this summer in unprecedented numbers.  According to a recent travel industry survey, there is a remarkable surge in American confidence for summer travel in 2024.

According to Allianz Partners USA, a significant majority of Americans (62%) plan to embark on at least a week-long summer trip of 100 or more miles from home. That’s an increase from last year’s already remarkable numbers and is the culmination of a four-year upward trend in travel plans.

If you are in the group of folks that plan to travel…but haven’t made your plans yet – fear not!  There is still time and we are here to give you some ideas of destinations to consider.

But – don’t wait much longer.  More demand means less availability and higher prices the longer you delay. Why not consider some of these great spots:

KEY WEST

The island city boasts coral reefs, water sports, snorkeling and diving for adventure lovers.  Its also a great place for eclectic night life, great food and the southernmost point in the country!  The tiny island is easy to get around and its proximity to the ocean makes the weather more comfortable than other summer beach spots.

Key West is home to one of the  world’s most beautiful sunsets – and folks gather each night to watch the show in Mallory Square.

Don’t miss:   Jimmy Buffet fans can do a walking tour of Old Key west focused on all the locations around the island that inspired his songs. Visit his favorite watering holes and the location of his very first gig.

CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY

The area north of San Franciso is known worldwide as a first-class wine-growing region. With thousands of wineries, the area also boasts amazing cuisine, luxury resorts, history and culture.

A visit to Napa or Sonoma Valley can be a great weekend trip or part of a larger visit to Northern California. If you are looking to escape to beautiful rolling hills, charming restaurants and vineyard-dotted landscapes, you will not be disappointed. There are also hot air balloon experiences, bike rentals, walking tours, hiking trails, spas, museums and more to fill your time.  After you fill your wine glass, of course.

Where to stay:  Beautiful resorts are all over the area but our favorites include the Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa.  Nestled on 28 acres, surrounded by rolling vineyards, guests experience stylish cottage-style accommodations with alfresco showers and private landscaped gardens. Another special place is The Estate Yountville, nestled in the heart of downtown Yountville with two options for accommodations – the beautiful boutique Vintage House and the modern and lively Hotel Villagio. Inspired by the surrounding vineyards, the property is in walking distance to a variety of top-notch restaurants and shops.

BOURBON TRAIL

Bourbon is having a moment and the blue grass state is home to more barrels of the stuff than people…with nearly 100 different bourbon and whiskey brands produced.  The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a collection of 18 distilleries, offering tastings, tours and a fun way to spend a long weekend.

Imagine a scenic drive along the horse farms of the state, visiting Lincoln’s birthplace and stepping back in time where you learn about Kentucky’s history and the strong tradition of distilling bourbon that began in the 1700s.  Touring the bourbon trail with friends – and a driver -  can be a really fun way to spend a summer weekend.

Travel Tips:  Many distilleries are closed on Monday and Tuesday – so don’t plan your trip on those days if you want tours and tastings. Tours book far in advance, so plan early and don’t overbook yourself. Its difficult to visit more than 2 or 3 distilleries each day and still have time to eat meals!

MONTANA

Visit Montana during the summer and you will see why the nickname “big sky” was applied to the inspiring landscapes.  Now, with American Airlines seasonal non-stop service to Bozeman from Charlotte, a trip to this gorgeous destination is much easier.  Outdoor activities abound in the area – adventurers and wildlife lovers will be in heaven. Couple this with Yellowstone National Park – and it’s a clear winner for all kinds of travelers.

And – rest assured, it is not just a gorgeous mountain town but also filled with great restaurants, fun local events and concerts, shops and more.

Where to stay: Montage Big Sky is an unparalleled luxury resort – a perfect combination of rustic Montana complimented with modern refinements.  An amazing spa, great dining options, year round activities including biking, hiking, fly fishing and more great guests. Only 45 minutes from Yellowstone – it’s a wonderful place to stay and experience this beautiful area in comfort and style.
